American Bible Society
MISSION
The purpose of the American Bible Society is to provide the Holy Scriptures to every man, woman and child in a language and form each can readily understand, and at a price each can easily afford.
HISTORY
Founded in New York City in 1816, the American Bible Society (ABS) is a non-profit, non-denominational organization. For nearly two centuries, ABS has worked with Christians and biblical scholars from every tradition to provide translations and publications that do not contain doctrinal note or comment. The Society serves more than 100 denominations, both Protestant and Catholic. ABS was founded as a lay organization and remains so to this day.
OUTREACH
In 1999, the American Bible Society distributed more than 77 million copies of Bibles, New Testaments, and Scripture Portions and Selections in the United States. In 1946, ABS helped to create the United Bible Societies (UBS), a worldwide fellowship of 135 national Bible societies. UBS has distributed about 3 billion copies of the Scriptures since 1946 and is currently involved in nearly 650 translation projects.
TRANSLATIONS
ABS, a world leader in Bible translation, has set new standards for faithfully conveying the meaning of the original texts in living, accessible language. In 1965, ABS brought the Scriptures closer to the English spoken by most people with the Good News Bible. In 1995, ABS published the very readable Contemporary English Version.
MULTIMEDIA PUBLISHING
ABS publishes children's Scriptures, youth Scriptures, and Bible study resources in CD-ROM, and audio and video formats. The ABS web site includes a multi-translation Daily Bible Reading Guide, material from the ABS Archives and Library, and interactive pages for children.
